In 2004 I worked in the studio of Stefan Diez who was quite at the beginningof his career back then. One ouf our main projects was COUCH for elmarfloetotto, a textile skin filled with polystyrene balls and an internal supporting structure. There was a second project that had to do with fabric - KUVERT, a series of HF-welded bags for Authentics. We did lot`s of 1:1 modelling and I could gain first experience in fabric and stitching, I learned that it is possible to operate a sewing machine...
Strong fascination for the idea of giving shape to an object through giving shape to its surface. So I chose this as the topic for my graduation project, the next year. “sewn. a family of products that are manufactured by sewing or related techniques.“I started with a very inspiring 1000-picture photo-research of seams on objects of everyday life, on objects I found in ethnological musems, on building-sites, in arts and so on.
The other approach to the subject was simply buying canvas and a sewing-machine... After some weeks of experimentation, of finding out what`s possible and what`s not, there wasthis promising idea of injecting polyurethane-foam into a textile skin.
“Constructed three-dimensionally with standard CAD software, surfaces are digitally processed and serve as templates. By sewing these surfaces together to allow the polyurethane to expand, anexact replica of the computer-designed piece emerges. This production-process creates next to no costs for moulds and tools. The combination of fabric and polyurethane foam gives the structureamazing stability...“
